Fake .co.uk Sites Trick Unsuspecting Consumers

For anyone who's been scammed, I can tell you, it's not very nice. A few years ago my bank account got raided - don't know how, - but around £1400 UK pounds were plundered. My bank's attitude were excellent. The offending cloned card was being used in Bulgaria, the thieves were stealing £400 per day. The card was stopped and the money was repaid within 48 hours. Within that time there was much upset in my household. We like to believe we are always safe online, but, sadly, this just isn't the case for some of the time. The BBC ran a story today. It's not a new type of scam but makes interesting reading. Unfortunately many people are duped into thinking they are buying original consumer goods. Fortunately, when purchasing from trusted sellers we are hopefully always going to stay safe.  Just be careful out there in the big WWW!

"For £5, anyone can buy a "co.uk" domain name"

Trading standards officers say that consumers are being tricked into buying fake goods on the internet by companies pretending to be based in the UK.

The websites are often based in China, but use "co.uk" as part of their domain name, giving shoppers a false sense of security, they say.

It is thought that there could be as many as 480,000 websites which carry "co.uk", but which are not UK based.

The sites sell a range of goods from trainers to hair straighteners.
